Splatoon Targeted For First Half Of 2015, Features Single Player Mode and Local Multiplayer
First of all, our plan is to release this as a full retail packaged software in 2015… the first half of 2015. And because we’re releasing this as a full software title, we of course plan to include a single-player mode but then also a one-on-one multiplayer mode that can be played without connecting to the Internet
What we can tell you about the one-on-one, at least, is that one player will be using the GamePad, one player will be using the Pro Controller. And we’re actually thinking of having that one-on-one mode be something kinda completely different from the four-on-four one where it’ll be, you know, kind of a lot more stalking and hiding in the ink. It’ll be much more like a quiet mode in a sense.
And, you know, we’ve progressed [in development] at least to that point, but in terms of what we’re going to do with the screens – whether we’re going to have one person on the TV and one person on the GamePad – we’re not sure yet.

In turf battles, you can use special weapons by painting the ground and building up power. Below is one of these, the 'Barrier'. For a short time, this will rebound all of the opponent's attacks. It appears that there are other kinds of special weapons to be found as well.

Famitsu Reveals New Info on Wii U Title Splatoon, No Voice Chat Between Players Matched Up Online
Working on a local multiplayer mode in addition to online and Hero Mode
Hero mode is predominantly a 3D platformer with heavy emphasis on human-squid transformations
Random matching is done world wide, game tries to place you with players close to your skill level based on ratings
Tried implementing a system whereby you could give orders to your team mates, but battles were too quick and hectic for them to be effective so they got rid of the feature
Game won’t use CPU fighters; only once 8 human players have been found will a match start
Having multiple modes with random matching would limit the number of players per mode, so all the focus is on the 4 vs. 4 for that
No communication with players you are matched with
They didn’t think of using Bloopers when they decided on squids (they apparently forgot they existed)
No money can be earned in Hero Mode. Your points, as displayed at the end of the match, are turned into money and experience points.
A lot of the music is written by Touru Minegishi (who has worked on Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Super Mario

"No communication with players you are matched with"
Infelizmente isto deveria mesmo existir... Um jogo deste genero requer um pouco de tactica, coordenação e comunicação durante o jogo. É neste aspecto que a wii u perde em termos online para as restantes.
-The interview is with producer Hisashi Nogami, who is known as the director of every Animal Crossing up to City Folk, and directors Yusuke Amano, who also directed NSMB2, and Tsubasa Sakaguchi, who was a character designer on Twilight Princess and art director on Nintendo Land.
-The Inkling city (where the plaza is) is known as 'Highcolor/Haikara City' in Japanese.
-The concept of two teams of four shooting ink in a turf battle has been there since the original prototype, even though the characters where tofu-like blocks at the time.
-They experimented with other team sizes, but found with more than four players felt like they had little effect on battles, and with less than four that they had too much responsibility.
-Killing/attacking opponents online to prevent them from painting ink is just one strategy to win. You get no points or advantage directly from doing so.
-Hero mode uses basically the same controls as online matches, so anyone with difficulty in the can use the hero mode to practice.
-Ideally, you'll be matched with players of a similar rank to you (based off of experience points earned in matches). If not enough players, they'll put you with people further away from your rank. If there's only 8 players, you'll be matched together.
-While online is focused on just painting the ground, hero mode focuses on using the ink to move forward.
-Amano says he wants you to be able to look at the map on the GamePad and see where needs to be worked on for your team.
-No way to directly communicate with people you've been randomly matched with. They will appear post-match in your Plaza, where you can check out their gear, weapons, and comment.
-They picked squids because they were the best at representing the gameplay present in the prototype.
-Music for stages is random. Possible that I'm misunderstanding, but each player will have a different song while playing.
-Music is designed to be the sort that would be popular with the young Inklings involved with the turf battles.
-Rather than making some huge number of stages, they want to create stages that feel different when you use different weapon combinations.
-You don't earn money for gear in single player for balance reasons. Someone could grind money in hero mode and have their first online match with high level gear.
-In the final stages of development now.
-Aiming for, more or less, a simultaneous worldwide release.
-They plan on supporting the title post-release.

The game’s main online mode is Turf War, in which players with broadband Internet access can compete head-to-head in four-on-four teams to try to cover as much territory as possible in their team’s ink. As they do battle, players will gain levels and earn in-game currency that allows them to customize their Inkling. Players can equip different pieces of clothing, which each provide different game-play perks like swimming more quickly through ink or decreasing the time needed for them to refill their ink canister. Players can also equip pre-determined weapon sets consisting of main weapons like rapid-fire ink guns, long-range ink rifles and paint rollers, as well as sub-weapons like ink bombs or sprinklers. Players can also fill up their special gauge in battle to unleash powerful special weapons for a brief period of time. Players will battle in a variety of online multiplayer maps, including the newly announced Blackbelly Skatepark, Saltspray Rig and Walleye Warehouse.
For the first time, Nintendo also revealed a new multiplayer mode called Ranked Battle, which keeps track of each player’s online ranking. Splat Zones is one of the additional ways to play online in this mode. As opposed to Turf War, which will be available to all players as soon as they begin playing Splatoon, Splat Zones lets players try to control the territory of specific areas of the map with their ink blasts. As they play these ranked modes online, they will have the opportunity to increase their rating from “C-” to “A+,” which will be dynamically updated based on their performance. Players will need to achieve an in-game online Level of 10 by leveling up their Inkling in Turf War online matches before gaining access to these additional modes. As a result, once the game launches in May, Nintendo will track the global progress of players as they gain levels, and once a critical mass of players has achieved Level 10, this additional mode will be unlocked for players who meet the ranking criteria.
The single-player mode in Splatoon lets players use the game’s mechanics to explore the underground base of the game’s army of octopi antagonists, the Octarians, in original stages that test their ability to shoot, jump and splatter ink. Players can tackle a variety of levels with a variety of clever devices that can only be found in single-player mode. Each of the game’s single-player stages are designed to let players master tips and techniques that can be directly applied to the game’s multiplayer modes.

– The weapons you unlock come in three-piece sets
– There’s one primary, a grenade type, and a special weapon
– If you switch over to the Uzi-like Splattershot Jr., you’re also switching over to Splatter Bombs as a sub weapon and a shield as your special
– Single-player design is similar in setup to a stage in Super Mario Galaxy
– Each stage strings together floating islands that focus on building specific skills
– Each stage has a squid launching sequence
– Story: follows Cap’n Cuttlefish, an odd-looking war hero who wants you to collect recover the stolen Zapfish from the dastardly Octarians
– Learn about the fundamentals of shooting, swimming, jumping, speeding through ink tubes, or even using valves of gushing color in combat in the first few levels
– Fight grunt-like Octotroopers, squarish Octostamps, and speedy Octolings
– Each one has a distinct method of fighting and personality on the battlefield
– Splat Zones: one of the objective games you’ll find under Splatoon’s Ranked Battles
– This has players capturing and holding a single zone until a 100-point timer runs down to zero
– Teams need to work together to press and hold the highlighted zone and keep out rivals
– Ranked Battles won’t unlock until a portion of the player base reaches level 10
– Ranked matches separate the player pool by specific letter ranks that range from top tier A+ to C-
– Ex: A rank players won’t play with a C rank squad
– Ranks are independent of the player leveling system, which unlocks new equipment sets
– Rather than strategize via direct communication, Nintendo suggests that players use the bird’s eye view of the map that’s displayed on the GamePad to locate their teammates
– Fighting to kill in single-player, which is different from multiplayer
– Single-player has sponge platforms that grow when hit with ink
